Tribunal Prosecutors Likely to Face Politics 'All the Time,' Expert Says

Tribunal prosecutors ended two days of meetings Thursday with other international tribunal experts, as the Khmer Rouge tribunal moves closer to trials of former leaders of the regime.

The Khmer Rouge tribunal prosecutors were determined to bring senior leaders of the regime to justice, and the meetings would help to that end, tribunal spokesman Reach Sambath said.

"We should not let those committing crimes, especially this serious crime against humanity, get away with their acts, and this is the main point of the meeting," Reach Sambath said. "The meeting also discussed some difficulties faced by judges in other countries."

Cambodia's tribunal prosecutors met with lawyers from similar atrocity crimes trials, including from Rwanda, Sierra Leone and the former Yugoslavia.

Thursday's meeting was closed to journalists, but Reach Sambath said prosecutors from other international criminal courts discussed technical issues with Cambodian tribunal personnel.

The meeting provided a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences and the opportunity to develop international criminal laws, a statement from the Khmer Rouge tribunal said.
