Bush to Deliver Major Speech on Iraq, Terrorism

President Bush will deliver a speech Thursday highlighting Iraq's role as a major front in the war on terrorism.

The White House calls it a major address and part of an effort to raise public awareness of the stakes involved in Iraq. Spokesman Scott McClellan says the president will speak in what he called "unprecedented detail" about the threat of terrorism.

The speech comes as opinion polls show declining American public support for the president's Iraq policy. It also comes less than two weeks before a crucial referendum on the new Iraqi constitution that Washington hopes will lead to a stable, secure and democratic Iraq.

Mr. Bush will be speaking at an event commemorating the victims of the September 11th attacks on the United States.

Wednesday, Vice President Dick Cheney said terrorists want to overturn Iraq's democratic government and return the country to the rule of tyrants.
